Leatherworking dates back to before 400,000 BC - and so is fairly considered one of the world’s oldest and most revered crafts. And one we take very seriously at Warrior Garden.
From the ancient warriors who fashioned their own armor to the artisan makers of today, skill in leatherworking has long been seen as an impressive symbol of someone’s durability, craftsmanship and of course self-reliance. Historically, and counter to the mass production we see in today’s world, every boot, bag and belt was made by hand, ensuring each piece was unique and built to last.
Today, working with leather offers much more than just utility, it’s a therapeutic, hands-on skill that promotes focus, patience and creativity. Many craftsmen describe the process as meditative, a ritual of cutting, stitching, and shaping that connects them to a tradition that spans centuries.
But we appreciate that it can seem daunting, so this article is designed to support you on your first steps with the art of leatherwork.
To get started in leathercraft, you will need a few essential tools. Whether you’re making a wallet, key fob or BBQ tool roll, these basics will help you master the craft:
🛠 Cutting tools: we recommend a sharp utility knife or rotary cutter for safety and precision in your leather cutting.
🛠 Edge beveler: a nifty tool that will round off any sharp edges for a more refined finish.
🛠 Stitching kit: an essential that should include needles, waxed thread, and a stitching pony, this will help you create durable seams that will last.
🛠 Hole punch: you’ll use this for creating rivets, belt holes, and fastening points.
🛠 Leather mallet: very useful in helping to set rivets, emboss patterns, and stamp designs without damaging the material.
🛠 Burnishing tool: another tool that will ensure your end project is as professional as possible, this will smooth and polish edges.
